The #1 e-bike tour in the Kennebunks! As you cruise along this 10- to 12- mile loop, you'll stop to visit all the can't-miss scenic and historic sites in town — and a few lesser-known gems, as well. Your local guide will entertain you with larger-than-life tales and fascinating historical facts while allowing plenty of time to snap photos and absorb the breathtaking coastal Maine vistas.
If you have any questions that aren't answered on this page or you wish to book by phone, just give us a call at 207-967-6065!
The Coastal Classic Historical E-Bike Tour starts at our shop in Kennebunk's Lower Village, crosses the Kennebunk River into the touristic hub of Dock Square, and winds through the Kennebunkport Historic District, where 19th-century sea captains and shipping magnates oversaw vast economic empires from stately mansions.
Next, you'll head towards the ocean for a ride along the most beautiful stretch of coastal road in Southern Maine, stopping along the way to view the sweeping summer compound of two American presidents.
The tour then heads for Cape Porpoise, a charming seaside village and home to a nearly 200 year-old lighthouse. Here, in a deep harbor ringed with wild islands, Maine fishermen and lobstermen have plied their trades for more than three centuries.
From start to finish, this tour is pure, effortless fun aboard our well-maintained class 2 e-bikes. Hills are nothing to worry about. Four pedal assist options tailor the experience to your physical ability level, with an optional throttle for those moments when you would rather not pedal at all.
And if you've never ridden an e-bike before, no worries. If you can ride a regular bicycle, you'll be fine. Your patient and personable guide will demonstrate everything you need to know before the tour begins and will continue to check in on you throughout the experience.
Safety is our top priority. Your guide will teach you how to share the road safely with vehicle traffic and will make sure the entire group remains together throughout the tour. No rider left behind!

Want to bring children along? A passenger e-bike with seating for one child or two small children is available for a price upgrade. A trailer with seating for one or two small children (less than 40 pounds each) is also available. See options during booking.

Please note: Looser pant legs may get snagged in the bicycle chain. If your personal style is on the "flowy" side, your guide may recommend tucking your pants into your socks.

Please arrive at least 15-minutes early to check in and get fitted for bikes and helmets. Parking should be plentiful in front of the bike shop, 8 Western Ave., Kennebunk, Maine. Pay for parking at kiosks. If the parking lot is full, you may park for free at 30 North St., Kennebunkport, Maine, a .6-mile walk from the bike shop.
Health & Safety
Helmets are required (and will be provided). You will sign a safety waiver before commencing the tour. Participants should be comfortable riding a bicycle of any type for two hours with frequent breaks.

The Coastal Classic Scenic and Historical E-Bike Tour is the perfect experience for people who enjoy a leisurely pace and stopping frequently to learn about history and take pictures. If you're looking to cover more distance and kick the speed into a higher gear, take a look at our Coastal Maine E-Bike Adventure, which runs every day at 2 p.m.
If you want to take a similar tour, but on regular, non-electric bikes, check out our Coastal Maine Sightseeing Pedal Bicycle Tour (ages 12+ welcome on that one).

The Coastal Classic (this tour) is shorter than the Coastal Maine E-Bike Adventure, with more frequent stops and more focus on history and storytelling.
Yes, it is, and we share the road with traffic. It is simply impossible to plot an off-road bicycle tour along this section of the Maine coast; the roads are too old and narrow for dedicated bike lanes. However, Kennebunk and Kennebunkport are known as bike-friendly communities. Summer traffic moves slowly and drivers watch out for cyclists and pedestrians. Furthermore, our guides are all experienced riders, trained to provide careful instruction and observation to keep you and your group-members safe along the route. Coastal Maine Hike and Bike has a spotless safety record. Please call if you have any concerns (207-967-6065).
Sure, but on our e-bikes, you won’t notice them.
No! If you can ride a conventional pedal bicycle, you can ride an e-bike. You pedal, brake, and shift gears as you would on any other bike, and our guides will demonstrate how to operate the rest. You will not leave our shop without being confident on your e-bike.
We’d be happy to explain the technical details, but in essence, all an e-bike does is magnify your pedaling effort with an electric motor. The harder you pedal, the more help you get, meaning, if you’re trying to get up a hill or reach a faster speed, the bike will detect your effort and compensate accordingly. The sensation is as if you have super powers. Pedaling up a hill feels as easy as pedaling a conventional bike along flat ground.
Yes! Again, if you can ride a regular bike, you are 90 percent of the way there. Our guide will get you the rest of the way.
Also an option! The great thing about e-bikes is you can work as much or as little as you want. This allows groups of mixed ability to cycle together.
Our class 2 e-bikes can reach a maximum speed of 20 miles-per-hour. However, we will not go that fast for most of the tour. After all, it is a tour, and at those speeds, you would miss too much. Our tours move at an appropriate pace for sightseeing and for keeping the group together.
If you are looking for a go-fast e-bike experience, we recommend checking out our e-bike rental selection.
Not for this tour. It is difficult to keep groups of e-bike and regular bike riders together. There are several relatively steep hills along this tour, and we feel that, for most people, the experience is more pleasant on an e-bike.
That said, our guides respect the old school. If you would like to schedule a private non-electric bike tour, we would be happy to take you (depending on guide availability). Just contact us or give us a call (207-967-6065) to schedule.
No. You will share the tour with other groups. We take out up to 10 participants at a time.
If you are interested in a private tour, please call 207-967-6065 or email info@coastalmainehikeandbike.com and we'll set something up!
You can book another time as a private tour. Please call 207-967-6065 or email info@coastalmainehikeandbike.com.
Not on their own bike. Maine state law says you must be 16 or older to operate a class 2 e-bike.
If you would like to bring a child along, we can offer a family e-bike with a passenger seat. For very young children, we can offer a trailer with space for two children (below 40 pounds each). See options and pricing during booking or call for more information. These e-bikes are not compatible with child seats.
If you want to take a similar tour, but on regular, non-electric bikes, check out our Coastal Maine Sightseeing Pedal Bicycle Tour (ages 12+ welcome on that one).
