Coastal Maine E-Bike Adventure

Long sandy beaches, rocky coastal crags, sprawling seaside mansions, classic New England countryside, stunning historical architecture — this tour has it all, and then some! The Coastal Maine E-Bike Adventure is for intrepid spirits who want to go the distance and see everything.

Along this 15- to 17-mile loop you'll venture a little bit farther afield than most while still visiting the must-see highlights of the Kennebunks. And don't worry; this isn't a whirlwind tour. Your guide will make sure to allow plenty of time to stop, learn about local history, dip your toes in the ocean (if you want), and take pictures.

If you have any questions that aren't answered on this page or you wish to book by phone, just give us a call at 207-967-6065!

Tour Route: The Grand Tour

Your adventure starts at our shop in Kennebunk's Lower Village and heads across the river to the touristic hub of Dock Square. From there you'll cycle through the Kennebunkport Historic District before turning toward the ocean for a ride alongside some of the most gorgeous coastline in Southern Maine.

After stopping to visit a magnificent historical church and the storied Bush family compound (summer home of two presidents), your guide will lead you out of the hustle and congestion of Kennebunkport and into the peaceful surrounding area where (among other things) you'll visit a working fishing pier, view a nearly 200 year-old lighthouse, and marvel at miles of open beach.

The return trip will take you through sun-dappled forests and bucolic farmland.

Go farther and see more with the zippiest bikes and friendliest guides in town!

The Bikes: Made to Move

This is a true e-bike adventure, traversing a variety of environments with lots of opportunities to cruise and enjoy the ride. Our well-maintained class 2 e-bikes make it possible without working up too much of a sweat. Hills are nothing to worry about.

Four pedal assist options tailor the experience to your physical ability level, with an optional throttle for those moments when you would rather not pedal at all. (And if speed is your thing, your guide will give you the chance to open up the bike and see what "turbo mode" can really do.)

Never ridden an e-bike before? No worries. If you can ride a regular bicycle, you'll be fine. Your patient and personable guide will demonstrate everything you need to know before the tour begins and continue to check in on you throughout the experience.

Safety is our top priority. Your guide will teach you how to share the road safely with vehicle traffic and will make sure everyone is together and heading in the right direction. No rider left behind!

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this tour different from the Coastal Classic Scenic & Historical E-Bike Tour?

The Coastal Maine E-Bike Adventure (this tour) is longer than the Coastal Classic Scenic & Historical E-Bike Tour. Stops are less frequent with longer stretches of cycling time.

Is this tour experience on the road?

Yes, it is, and we share the road with traffic. It is simply impossible to plot an off-road bicycle tour along this section of the Maine coast; the roads are too old and narrow for dedicated bike lanes. However, Kennebunk and Kennebunkport are known as bike-friendly communities. Summer traffic moves slowly and drivers watch out for cyclists and pedestrians. Furthermore, our guides are all experienced riders, trained to provide careful instruction and observation to keep you and your group-members safe along the route. Coastal Maine Hike and Bike has a spotless safety record. Please call if you have any concerns (207-967-6065).

Are there any hills?

Sure, but on our e-bikes, you won’t notice them.

I've never ridden an e-bike before. Is it hard?

No! If you can ride a conventional pedal bicycle, you can ride an e-bike. You pedal, brake, and shift gears as you would on any other bike, and our guides will demonstrate how to operate the rest. You will not leave our shop without being confident on your e-bike.

What is riding an e-bike like?

We’d be happy to explain the technical details, but in essence, all an e-bike does is magnify your pedaling effort with an electric motor. The harder you pedal, the more help you get, meaning, if you’re trying to get up a hill or reach a faster speed, the bike will detect your effort and compensate accordingly. The sensation is as if you have super powers. Pedaling up a hill feels as easy as pedaling a conventional bike along flat ground.

But I'm not technically gifted. Are you sure I can handle an e-bike?

Yes! Again, if you can ride a regular bike, you are 90 percent of the way there. Our guide will get you the rest of the way.

What if I want a physical challenge?

Also an option! The great thing about e-bikes is you can work as much or as little as you want. This allows groups of mixed ability to cycle together.

Will we go really fast?

Our class 2 e-bikes can reach a maximum speed of 20 miles-per-hour. However, we will not go that fast for most of the tour. After all, it is a tour, and at those speeds, you would miss too much. Our tours move at an appropriate pace for sightseeing and for keeping the group together. The Coastal Maine Scenic E-Bike Adventure (this tour) includes at least one stretch of road where the guide will allow you to (optionally) experience the full-speed "turbo" mode on the bike.

Can I use a regular non-electric bike instead?

Not for this tour. It is difficult to keep groups of e-bike and regular bike riders together. There are several relatively steep hills along this tour, and we feel that, for most people, the experience is more pleasant on an e-bike.

That said, our guides respect the old school. If you would like to schedule a private non-electric bike tour, we would be happy to take you (depending on guide availability). Just  contact us or give us a call (207-967-6065) to schedule.

Is the tour private?

No. You will share the tour with other groups. We take out up to 10 participants at a time.

If you are interested in a private tour, please call 207-967-6065 or email info@coastalmainehikeandbike.com and we'll set something up!

2 p.m. doesn't work for my group. Can we book another time?

You can book another time as a private tour. Please call 207-967-6065 or email info@coastalmainehikeandbike.com.

Can a person under 16 participate?

Not on their own bike. Maine state law says you must be 16 or older to operate a class 2 e-bike. We can offer a family e-bike with a passenger seat. Please call to discuss (207-967-6065). Otherwise, consider the Coastal Classic Scenic & Historical E-Bike Tour, which allows booking a passenger bike or child's trailer online. Or, check out the non-electric Coastal Maine Sightseeing Pedal Bike Tour, which allows riders 12 and older.
